Annie Wennerberg Homers Three Times as Spartans Sweep Denison

The Case Western Reserve University softball team swept Denison University 4-2 and 11-4 at Mather Park this afternoon to advance to 20-7 overall during the 2015 season.

CWRU took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) tripled and freshman centerfielder Katie Wede (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) singled.

A home run from senior designated player Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) in the bottom of the third extended the Spartans' lead to 4-0.

In the first game, O'Brien went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Wede went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Roberts went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) pitched 4.2 innings with five strikeouts, while senior pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) pitched 2.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts.

Despite falling behind 2-0 after the first inning, Wennerberg's three home runs in as many innings highlighted the 11-4 win during game two.

O'Brien and Wede doubles in the bottom of the second gave the Spartans to a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Spartans increased their lead with the first Wennerberg home run. Her home run in the fourth inning brought in two runs. Wennerberg finished the game 4-for-4 with four runs and five RBIs. O'Brien and Wede each went 3-for-5 with one RBI.
