From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) broke the Spartans' single-season home run record as the Case Western Reserve University softball team defeated The University of Mount Union 9-8 and 10-1 (five innings).

Wennerberg now has 13 home runs in 19 games this season. She broke the previous mark of 11 by Lauren Wolz in 2011. Wolz is the program's first and only All-American. In the first game of the doubleheader, Wennerberg went 3-for-4 with three home runs and five RBIs. She added a fourth home run during the second game.

While the Purple Raiders took an 8-3 lead, the Spartans rallied back to make it a 8-5 with doubles from senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola), senior first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe), and junior shortstop Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance).

The Spartans would seal-the-deal in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, two-run home run from O'Brien, who went two-of-three with three RBIs, and another two-run shot from Wennerberg, her third of the game.

During the second game, CWRU carried the momentum from the previous game jumping ahead 3-0 after the first inning and 7-1 through two innings. In the second inning, Wennerberg hit her fourth home run of the day. She finished with four runs batted in.

The Spartans improve to 12-5 overall, while the Purple Raiders drop to 9-7.
