From Emory University Athletics
Sydney Carpenter and freshman Audrey Weller combined for a one-hit shutout against Roanoke College on Saturday, highlighting the Emory softball team's 2-0 performance on the opening day of its 3n2 Classic. The Eagles recorded a 6-0 decision over the Maroons which followed a 3-2 triumph in eight innings against Birmingham Southern.
Carpenter raised her season record to 3-0 after tossing the
first six frames against Roanoke, allowing just one hit and
striking out 11. Weller came on in the seventh and fanned one
opposing batter. Senior shortstop Brianna
Berceau went two-for-three at the plate and delivered a
three-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave Emory
a 5-0 advantage. Junior Alyssa Pollard collected a
pair of hits in four at-bats and knocked in one run.
In the Birmingham Southern contest, Emory fell behind by a 1-0
count before a sacrifice fly by Pollard drove in sophomore Amy
Wray with the tying run in the bottom of the fifth
inning. Emory had a chance to win the game in its half
of the seventh when the first two runners reached base before the
Panthers escaped that jam. Playing with the tie-breaker rule, BSC
scored a run in the top of the eighth, but could not hold its
advantage as Emory responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of
the frame as a result of a RBI fielder's choice by
junior Hannah Sendel and a BSC fielding error that
allowed senior Micah Scharff to score the deciding
tally.
The two wins upped No. 16 Emory's overall record to 6-0.
