From Emory University Athletics
Freshman Ashley Powers came through with a dramatic
two-out double in the seventh inning that scored the tying and
winning runs in a victory over Lynchburg, giving the Emory softball
a sweep of Sunday's two contests at 3n2 Elite Event. Emory is now
4-0 on the season.
After Lynchburg scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a
4-3 lead, the Eagles saw their first two batters in their half of
the frame make outs. Sophomore Tara Fallahee reached base
after getting hit by a pitch and then moved to second
after Taylor Forte drew a walk. That set the stage
for Powers, whose two-bagger to right center pushed the two Emory
base runners home. Powers ended the day with a 3-for-4 effort
at the plate with three RBIs. Forte finished with a pair of
safeties as did junior Alyssa Pollard. Sophomore
pitcher Brittany File earned her second win, going all
seven innings against the Hornets and allowing six hits while
fanning four.
Emory opened the day with a 5-2 decision over Rhodes with
junior Hannah Sendel socking a solo homer in the bottom
of the fifth, her second hit of the contest, that gave Emory a 3-1
lead. The following inning, Powers delivered a two-run home run to
left center that closed out the Eagles' run production for that
contest. Junior hurler Sydney Carpenter drew the starting
nod and pocketed the win, tossing four innings and surrendering one
run while striking out three. Freshman Jacky Farrow and
Brittany File closed out the last three innings.
