NYU Hires Pair of Assistant Coaches

NYU Hires Pair of Assistant Coaches

From NYU Athletics

Two assistant coaches have been added as the New York University softball team prepares for its varsity debut.

Olivia Calcagnini and Rachael McMahon have joined the staff of Head Coach Now-Allah James. Calcagnini will work primarily with the Violets' catchers, while McMahon will coach first base and work with the Violets' infielders.

The twosome join current assistant Cassie Vondrak as members of James' staff.

Calcagnini brings extensive experience both as a varsity player and as a coach. She has been serving as a coach within the Empire State Huskies Fastpitch Softball Program and as the Head Coach for 10 and under and 12 and under teams from 2010-14.

Calcagnini graduated from Pace University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing. However, she spent the first two seasons of her collegiate career playing for Division I Siena College before transferring to Division II Pace in 2010.

At Siena, Calcagnini was a power-hitting infielder, seeing most of her action at third base. She started most of the games and was one of the team's top run producers. As a junior at Pace, Calcagnini earned selection to the Northeast-10 All-Conference Third Team. She was tied for third in total bases in the conference (95), tied for fifth in home runs (9) and tied for seventh in doubles (13).

In addition to her duties at NYU, Calcagnini also works as a catering sales manager at the Intercontinental Hotel in Manhattan.

McMahon also attended Pace. She graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications, and is currently pursuing a graduate degree at her alma mater.

A four-year starter on the Pace Setters' softball team, McMahon was the team's primary third baseman. As a junior, she tied for third on the team in batting average (.292).

During her playing career, McMahon also worked as a student assistant at the Pace University Athletic Media Relations/Communications department.

"I'm very excited to add these two coaches to our staff," said James. "Olivia and Rachel have extensive experience playing collegiate softball and can share that wealth of knowledge with our players."
