Sage Scheiwiller Tosses First No-Hitter in NYU History

From NYU Athletics

There are many milestones for a first-year varsity program such as the New York University softball team. However, Sage Scheiwiller's no-hitter in game two of the Violets' doubleheader sweep of Baruch College on Sunday, April 12, was probably the biggest so far.

NYU bested the Bearcats 19-0 in the first game and 9-1 in the second, both lasting five innings. The twinbill was held at the Bahoshy Softball Complex on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx.

"Sage was just in a different zone today and everything was working," said NYU Assistant Coach Cassie Vodrak. "She had tight spin on all her pitches, hit all her spots, and was able to work around the batters and get them out."

The Violets (7-19) began the day behind some strong pitching from Jacqueline Tremblay, who posted a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts and only two hits allowed. Scheiwiller followed up that performance with a historic one of her own in the circle in game two. The freshman tossed five innings, allowing no hits, one earned run, one walk, and striking out seven.

NYU started its offensive effort in the bottom of the first inning of game one, getting to the Bearcats (2-12) for nine runs. The Violets followed up with five more in the bottom of the second before both teams went scoreless in the third. The home team then got five more runs across in the bottom of the fourth inning to complete the scoring for the first half of the doubleheader. Tremblay set the Baruch side down in order in the fifth, striking out the first two batters to secure her fourth complete-game victory of the season.

"Jackie did awesome too. A two-hitter is just an outstanding performance," continued Vondrak. "We've been able to get our pitchers on track now to where we can get great performances from them every time out."

Game two started off a bit slower, as the Violets did not get on the board until the home half of the third when they put up a five-spot on the Bearcats. NYU followed that up with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 9-0 lead.

Scheiwiller came into the top of the fifth sporting a perfect game. But, a series of unorthodox events, including a dropped third strike and a run that scored on a wild pitch, led to her still-monumental no-hitter. In addition, the final pitch of the game was also out-of-the-ordinary.

Baruch's Yicary Caraballo was at the plate with two strikes and two outs. The Bearcat catcher hit the payoff pitch straight down in fair territory, but it looked as though it would bounce foul. Instead, the ball bounced directly up and hit Caraballo in the face and was called a strike three -- game over.

DOUBLEHEADER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Molly Webber was 5-for-6 with five runs, five RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base. She also hit the first-ever NYU home run at the Bahoshy Softball Complex.

- Scheiwiller had a nice day at the plate, as well. The rookie was 5-for-7 with four runs and three RBIs.

Rachel Fulton went a combined 3-for-3 with three runs, a sacrifice fly and a hit by pitch.

Val Schwein was 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs, a walk, and a double.

Natalie Evans went 3-for-5 with three runs, five RBIs, a walk, a stolen base, and was hit by a pitch.

- Kahala Bonsignore was 2-for-5 with three runs, a RBI and a walk.

"It really helps out the pitching and the defense when we can create runs like that," Vondrak said. "Everyone was very disciplined at the plate and was able to get the job done to produce runs."
