Maroon Offense Breaks Out in Sweep of North Park

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago softball team posted double-digit runs in both games of a doubleheader for the first time this season in a 10-3, 11-3 sweep of North Park University on Monday.

The Maroons improved to 14-16 and the Vikings fell to 5-25.

Game One – UChicago 10, North Park 3

The visitors got off to a good start with one run in each of the opening two innings. Junior outfielder Devan Parkison led off the game with a walk, stole second base and scored on sophomore second baseman Anna Woolery's single. The Maroons then scored on a bases-loaded error to go up 2-0 in the second.

North Park quickly tied the score with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. However, UChicago got rolling right away with five runs in the third frame. Freshman first baseman Alyssa Stolmack launched a two-run home run and junior pitcher Jordan Poole cracked a double to plate a pair. Parkison then made the score 7-2 with a RBI double of her own.

In the top of the fifth, Woolery knocked a RBI double, followed by a RBI single by sophomore outfielder Maggie O'Hara. North Park got one run back in the bottom of the sixth. UChicago then closed out the game with one more run in the seventh when Woolery singled, stole a base and came around to score on an O'Hara single.

The Maroons totaled 14 hits and were led by Woolery, who hit 4-for-5 with two RBI. Poole (two RBI), O'Hara (two RBI) and junior third baseman Kathleen Kohm all recorded two hits apiece.

Poole (6-7) picked up the complete-game victory. Her pitching line featured three runs, five hits, eight walks and four strikeouts.

Game Two – UChicago 11, North Park 3

The start of game two was almost identical to game one. Parkison once again led off with a walk and stole second base. Woolery came through again with a RBI, this time a double. Kohm made it 2-0 with a run-scoring single.

The Maroons poured it on in the top of the third inning by scoring eight runs on only three hits. A hit-by-pitch and two walks loaded the bases, and freshman catcher Olivia Haneywas also hit by a pitch to force in a run. Freshman outfielder Sara Koniewicz brought in one run on a sacrifice fly, and Woolery and O'Hara soon followed with RBI singles. Kohm capped the big inning with a grand slam homer.

The Vikings launched a three-run homer of their own in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 10-3. But Stolmack went yard again – her third of the season – with a lead-off solo shot in the sixth to go up 11-3. That final run helped end the game after six innings via the eight-run rule.

The Maroons banged out 12 hits and made one error. Kohm went 2-for-3 with one homer and five RBI. Woolery was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Stolmack compiled a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with one homer and one RBI and Parkison was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.

Freshman Molly Moran (5-5) pitched all six innings and tallied three runs, eight hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
