The University of Chicago softball team banged out 27 hits combined in a doubleheader sweep of Thomas College 7-2 and 7-0 on Saturday.
The Maroons finished their spring break trip to Florida with an 8-4 record. The Terriers fell to 0-13.
Game One – UChicago 7, Thomas 2
The first game started fast for the Maroons, who scored three times in the opening inning. An error brought the first run home and freshman designated player Alyssa Stomack cracked a two-run double.
Thomas answered with one run in the bottom of the first and second innings, scoring on a wild pitch and a single. But UChicago broke the game open with a four-run third inning – with all four scoring with two outs. Freshman outfielder Molly Moran hit a RBI single to right and freshman catcher Olivia Haney plated two with a single to left. Haney later scored on a wild pitch to account for the seventh and final tally.
UChicago banged out 13 hits and were led by junior outfielder Devan Parkison, who went 3-for-4 at the plate. Stolmack (two RBI), junior shortstop Kristin Lopez and sophomore second baseman Anna Woolery were all 2-for-3.
Senior pitcher Tabbetha Bohac improved her record to 2-1 with a seven-inning compete game. She struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing seven hits, two runs and five walks.
Game Two – UChicago 7, Thomas 0
Moran stepped into the pitching circle for game two and subsequently locked down the Thomas hitters with her first collegiate shutout. It was also the first shutout of the season for the Maroons. Moran racked up seven strikeouts versus only four hits and one walk surrendered.
UChicago's batters provided plenty of support with 14 hits – their second-highest total of the year. Woolery set the table in the first inning by singling, stealing second base and scoring on sophomore shortstop Maggie O'Hara's single.
The Maroons went on to tally two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Junior third baseman Kathleen Kohm led off the fourth with a double and scored on an error two batters later. Moran's RBI fielder's choice made it 3-0. The next time through the lineup, Kohm knocked a RBI single and scored on Bohac's single. In the sixth, Woolery drove in Parkison with a single to center and Kohm added another RBI single as well.
In the final stats, Kohm (two RBI) and Woolery (one RBI) both hit 3-for-4. O'Hara (one RBI), Bohac (one RBI) and junior designated player Jordan Poole all went 2-for-3. The Maroons stole five bases with Woolery and O'Hara contributing two each.
