Sarah Wayson Pitches UR To 8-3 Win Over NYU

From University of Rochester Athletics

Rochester scored in each of the first three innings to build a 7-0 lead, then went on to an 8-3 victory over NYU at the UAA Softball Championships on Saturday morning.

The win boosted Rochester's tournament record to 5-3 and the overall mark to 7-4. NYU is still looking for its first win of the season. The first-year Violet program is 0-8 in the UAA, 0-12 overall.

Sarah Wayson picked up the victory, her first of the season. She relieved Gabi Alatorre in the ourth inning and threw the last four innings. She allowed five hits, walked one, gave up one run (earned) and struck out five. In three innings on the mount, Alatorre did not allow a hit. She walked two and fanned two.

Alatorre hit her third home run of the spring, a three-run shot to center in the bottom of the first. In the second inning, Wayson's groundout produced a run with the bases loaded and a second run scored on a wild pitch. That put the Yellowjackets up, 5-0.

Another wild pitch – this one in the third inning – brought home Alatorre.  Ashley Amidon hit a sac fly scoring Julia Liberto to get it 7-0.

NYU scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth. After a walk and hit batsman, Alatorre departed, replaced by Wayson. She gave up a single that loaded the bases. Jacqueline Tremblay reached on a fielder's choice which scored Sage Scheiwiller with NYU's first run. Marisa Bella bunted one run home and Colby Tarsitano's single made it 7-3.

Rochester got one back in the bottom of the fourth. Laurelle Byrne-Cody doubled. Kayla Kibling bounced out to third with Byrne-Cody advancing. Wayson singled her home. In the last three innings on the mound, she stranded three baserunners. NYU had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh when  Wayson got Molly Webber to line out to Kibling who turned it into an unassisted double play.
