Spartans Complete 4-0 Weekend With Wins over Emory & Henry, Marietta

The Case Western Reserve University softball team ran its winning streak to five games with a pair of wins to close out its weekend on Sunday, defeating Emory and Henry College 7-2, followed by a second 7-2 victory over Marietta College in Emory, Virginia.

The Spartans improved to 5-3 overall on the season, while Emory and Henry dropped to 2-5, and Marietta fell to 1-2.

Game 1: CWRU 7, Emory & Henry 2
Emory and Henry scored a pair of runs in the first inning off starter Annie Wennerberg in the first inning, but the junior held the Wasps scoreless on four hits for the remainder of the game.

Case Western Reserve got on the board in the third, on an RBI single from Lindsey Robinson that scored Katie Wede, cutting the lead to 2-1. The next inning, The Spartans loaded the bases with one out for freshman Alex Favazza, who proceeded to launch a shot over the left field wall for her second home run of the season, giving the Spartans the advantage for good, 5-2.  Grace Tritchler added an RBI single in the fifth, and Wede drove in a run in the sixth, to cap off the scoring for CWRU.

Wennerberg struck out eight batters during the complete game victory, scattering six hits in the contest without walking a batter. Maren Waldner added a two-for-three day at the plate, including a double.

Game 2: CWRU 7, Marietta 2
For the second-straight game, the Spartans fell behind by two runs, after Marietta scored a pair in the third.  However, the Spartans scored five in the top of the fifth inning, taking the lead after an RBI single from Robinson and an error scored Wede and Savi Medlang. Kristen Klemmer added a two-RBI double later in the frame, and CWRU scored two more in the sixth to secure the win.

Nicole Doyle reached base four times in the game with two hits, including a triple, and a pair of walks, and Wede went three-for-three in the game with a pair of runs. Wennerberg pitched six inning to earn the win, allowing a pair of runs on seven hits and striking out five, while improving to 3-1 on the year.
