No. 4 Emory Pulls Off Sunday Doubleheader Sweep vs. Lake Forest

From Emory University Athletics

Sophomore Janelle Turnquest's one-out double in the bottom of the ninth scored pinch runner Kelsey Alexander with the winning run in a 4-3 victory, and allowed the Emory softball team to come away with a sweep of a doubleheader over Lake Forest College.  The two wins boosted the Eagles' overall record to 11-1 while the Foresters were making their season debut.   Emory won the opening game of the twinbill, 8-0, in five innings.

A two-out, two-run double by freshman shortstop Cassie Bacca in the bottom of the third of the second game gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead, but Lake Forest knotted the score in its half of the fourth.  Using the tie-breaker format, the Foresters scored once in the top of the eighth, but the Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning when a sacrifice fly by Melody Carter pushed Baca across the plate after she started the frame at second base. Emory rapped out 10 hits in the win with freshman Jenna Wilson and and Turquest joining Baca as Eagles who hit safely twice.  Junior Brittany File earned the win in relief of starter Madeline Maday, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one unearned run and one hit while striking out nine.

Emory employed a 10-hit attack in the first game with four players collecting a pair of safeties; junior left fielder Taylor Forte, freshman Jenna Wilson, junior right fielder Amy Wray and freshman third baseman Lana Herrmann.  Emory used a pair of Lake Forest errors to push across three runs in the bottom of the third that gave it a 4-0 lead.  After a scoreless fourth, the Eagles crossed the plate four times and in the process finished off the game.  Sophomore Ashley Powers and Forte delivered key hits in the outburst with Powers coming through with a RBI single and Forte and run producing triple. File tossed a one hitter, fanning 11 batters.
