No. 4 Emory Tops NYU -- Moves To 20-1

From Emory University Athletics

The No. 4-ranked Emory softball team's winning streak now stands at 11 games after its Saturday afternoon win over New York University at the University Athletic Association Championships.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 20-1, 9-0 in the league, with a 7-4 decision over the Violets who fell to 4-9 overall, 3-6 in conference play.

After clinching the league crown earlier in the day, Emory finished the NYU contest with nine hits, two each by sophomore Janelle Turnquest and freshman Tori Risner. Turnquest knocked in a pair of runs, as did freshman Emmeryn Wheelan. Trailing by a 2-1 margin, a solo homer by Turnquest, her seventh of the year, knotted the score. The Eagles went ahead for good in their half of the third, plating two runs after two were out.

Freshman Cassie Baca singled and then scored when senior Melody Carter stroked a double.  Carter then crossed the plate following a single by Turquest. A sacrifice fly by freshman Jessica MacWilliams accounted for Emory's fifth run while Wheelan's two-run homer, her first career round tripper, in the fifth closed out the Emory scoring.

Sophomore pitcher Audrey Weller came up big in relief and earned the win after going 6 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs, two hits and striking out nine.
