Emory Posts Saturday Wins At Triangle Classic

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory softball team remained undefeated after picking up pair of impressive wins on the opening day of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Cary, North Carolina. The Eagles opened with a five-inning, 16-5 triumph over Meredith College before registering a 16-1 decision in five innings over Washington College on Saturday evening.  Emory is now 8-0 on the season.

Emory saw 12 players hit safely against the Avenging Angels of Meredith, picking up a total of 14 safeties. The Eagles recorded a 10-run first inning with sophomore Janelle Turnquest delivering a bases-loaded triple and junior Taylor Forte and senior Melody Carter each coming through with two-run singles. After Meredith tacked up a pair of runs in its half of the first, Emory kept the offense flowing in the second, scoring five times. Freshman Lana Herrmann jump started the frame with a solo homer, her second round tripper of the season, while classmate Jessica MacWilliams plated two Eagles with a double. Freshman Tori Risner accounted for the team's final run with a solo homer in the top of the fifth. Sophomore pitcher Audrey Weller picked up the win, her second of the year in as many decisions, tossing the first two innings. Freshmen Toko Miller and Madeline Madayeach saw action in relief.

Washington College got on the board with a run in the top of the first, but its lead was short lived as Emory put five runs up in the second, highlighted by a three-run double by Carter, four runs in the third and seven in the fourth.  The beneficiaries of six WC errors, the Eagles were led by Carter's two hits and four RBIs while freshman right fielder Jenna Wilson collected a pair of safeties and scored three times. Junior pitcher Brittany File boosted her record to 6-0 after going the first three innings and striking out six batters.
