No. 4 Emory Remains Undefeated At UAA Championships WIth Wins Over Washington & NYU

From Emory University Athletics

The No. 4-ranked Emory softball team notched a pair of Wednesday victories on the second day of action at the University Athletic Association Championships.  The Eagles opened with a 6-1 victory over No. 2-ranked Washington University before posting a 4-1 decision over New York University.  Emory now stands 15-1 overall, 4-0 in the UAA.

In a tightly played affair that saw the score stand deadlocked at 1-1, the Eagles broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning, tacking five runs up on the board. With freshman Sam Vincent on third and pinch runner Jenna Wilson on second, sophomore Janelle Turnquest came through with a clutch one-out, three-run homer, her fourth of the season, that propelled Emory to a 4-1 advantage.  The Eagles plated two more runs after Turnquest's blast, with senior center fielder Alyssa Pollard delivering a two-run double.  Junior right fielder Amy Wray accounted for three of Emory's hits, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Junior pitcher Brittany File raised her season record to 12-1, going all seven innings and allowing five hits while striking out nine.

Holding a 2-1 lead, Emory put some distance between itself and NYU with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Pollard led off the frame with a single and then moved to second following a base hit by freshman shortstop Cassie Baca, her third of the contest. A double by senior Melody Carter pushed Pollard across the plate, with Carter later scoring via a single by sophomore Ashley Powers.  Sophomore Audrey Weller got the start in the circle and registered her third win in as many outings, tossing four innings, giving up one run and two hits, while striking out three. File earned her first save of the year after hurling three shutout innings and fanning seven.
