Emory Rolls To Doubleheader Sweep vs. Wesleyan

From Emory University Athletics

The No. 10-ranked Emory softball team broke out the bats Tuesday evening and came away with a sweep of a doubleheader at Wesleyan College.  The Eagles raised their win streak to six games and their overall record to 38-4 following 12-0 (5 inn.) and 7-2 decisions over the Wolves who fell to 10-26.

Senior Melody Carter continued her torrid hitting, going a combined 6-of-8 with five runs scored and three RBIs. Sophomore Ashley Powers hit safely in seven of eight trips to the plate over the two games and drove in three runs.

Both Carter and Powers went 4-for-4 in the opener, with each player also knocking in a pair of runs.  Powers singled in two runs to highlight a three-run first inning while Carter smashed a two-run double in the top of the fifth that gave the Eagles an 11-0 cushion.  Freshman Emmeryn Wheelen went 3-for-3 contest and senior outfielder Alyssa Pollard came through with a pair of safeties to go along with two runs.  Junior pitcher Brittany File upped her season record to 29-2, going all five innings and allowing just one hit while striking out nine.

In the nightcap, Powers picked up three hits and scored twice while Carter turned in a 2-for-3 hitting performance to key the Eagles' offensive attack. Emory scored three times in the first with Carter singling in Pollard with the game's first run and sophomore Janelle Turnquest delivering a two-run single later in the frame.  Holding a 5-2 edge, Emory put the game away with a pair of runs in the seventh, the first coming when Powers doubled in Carter who opened the inning with a single.  Freshman Madeline Maday pocketed the win in the circle, hurling the first four innings and giving up two runs and two hits while striking out four.  Toko Miller came on to earn the save, tossing three perfect innings of relief that saw her fan five.
