The New York University softball team swept New Jersey City University in a home doubleheader on Friday, April 29, at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University in the Bronx, NY.
With their 9-0 and 13-1 wins over the Gothic Knights (11-27), the Violets (21-15) have assured themselves of a winning record with only four games left on the regular-season schedule.
The day began successfully, as NYU scored five runs in the first inning on three hits and three NJCU errors. Claire Stefanelli and Sage Scheiwiller each had RBIs in the frame.
Kahala Bonsignore added a two-run single in the bottom of the second, while Stefanelli and Ashley Mains had RBI hits in the bottom of the fourth to conclude the scoring in the abbreviated five-inning contest.
The offensive output was welcomed but not needed, as started Karissa Zubulake shut down the Gothic Knights' attack on only two hits while striking out five. She raised her record to an impressive 7-1 with the victory.
Karissa did a nice job of attacking their hitters," said said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Wins come from great pitching."
The second verse was same as the first, as the Violets again scored five first-inning runs to open the nitecap. Ten batters came to the plate in the frame, with Carina Sturm's two-run double being the big hit.
NYU came right back with four more runs in the second. Scheiwiller and Mains had RBIs, while two runs scored on a NJCU error.
Val Schwein had a two-run double in the bottom of the third and Allyson Schmus had a two-run homer in the fourth to complete the NYU scoring.
Katherine Piorkowski started for the Violets and picked up her first collegiate win, hurling three scoreless innings. Jacqueline Tremblay went the final two of the five-inning contest, allowing the Gothic Knights' only run of the day on Julian Squeo's home run in the fourth.
The Violets have now won eight of their last nine game.
"Credit for our success goes to our players for the hard work they've put in," James said. "Now we just have to continue the roll we've been on."
FIRST-GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Bonsignore went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
- Scheiwiller, Mains and Dakota Damiani each had two hits.
SECOND-GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Schwein finished with a team-high three RBIs.
- Stefanelli scored a team-best three runs.
"We've played Brandeis twice this season and have come up short," James explained. "But, we're diffferent team now. It's a big series as far as I'm concernd."
