The University of Chicago softball team made its season debut on Saturday a successful one, as the Maroons shut down University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 7-0.

UChicago was scheduled to open the day with an early afternoon contest against University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. But the game was rained out and pushed the Wisconsin-Stevens Point matchup back by more than an hour.

The delay did not affect pitcher Jordan Poole's results in the circle. The senior was on point from the get-go and kept the Pointers off balance throughout her five innings pitched. She only allowed four base runners (one hit and three walks) while also displaying her swing-and-miss stuff with 10 strikeouts. Wisconsin-Stevens Point only got into scoring position twice, and Poole shut down both chances.

The Maroons nearly got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with junior second base Anna Woolery's single to right field, but the runner was cut down at the plate trying to score. However, UChicago did take a 1-0 lead in the fifth after senior shortstop Kristin Lopez's RBI groundout.

The sixth inning provided all the insurance the UChicago pitchers would need. Freshman designated player Carly Schulz made her collegiate debut a memorable one by jacking a three-run homer over the fence. Lopez followed up later in the frame with a three-run blast of her own to account for the final score.

Freshman Jordyne Prussak saw two innings of action at pitcher and earned her first collegiate save. She struck out three and allowed one hit. For the game, the Pointers were limited to a mere two hits.

UChicago racked up 11 hits and did not make an error. The offense received two hits each from Schulz, Woolery, junior third base Maggie O'Hara and senior first base Kathleen Kohm. Lopez finished with four RBI.
