Elena Wechsler of Rochester No-Hits RIT

From University of Rochester Athletics

Junior pitcher Eleni Wechsler tossed her second career no-hitter as the Rochester softball team defeated RIT 1-0.

Wechsler was efficient, throwing only 70 pitches and allowed just two Tiger baserunners to move Rochester (23-20) into the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament.  RIT drops to 17-22 on the year.

Overall the junior ended up with five strikeouts and just one walk.  Her only other no-hitter was back as a freshman against Skidmore College.

Rochester was able to score the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.  After a leadoff single from senior Kayla Kibling, freshman Harleigh Kaczegowicz singled to right center putting runners on first and second.  A fly out moved Kibling up to third base and a steal put runners on second and third.  Senior Mackenzie Cronin then singled to second base, reaching on a bang-bang play at first to give UR a 1-0 lead.

The visiting Tigers would threaten in the second, as their first two hitters reached base.  Amanda Cook led off with a walk and then Sam Killian reached on a sac bunt when UR couldn't get the lead runner at second base.  Wechsler wriggled out of the inning though, inducing an infield fly to third and then getting a double-play grounder to third handled nicely by UR's Logan Mohr.

After the score in the first, RIT's Sierra Valentine settled in the pitchers circle as well, surrendering just three hits and no runs the rest of the game.  She threw a complete game, not allowing a walk while striking out four.  Overall, she threw 91 pitches in the tough-luck loss.

Rochester's Kibling ended the game 2-3 with a run while Cronin was 2-3 with an RBI.
