Senior shortstop Kayla Kibling drove in five runs in two games and scored four more to lead the University of Rochester to a Senior Day softball sweep of St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets won the opener, 6-4, and took the nitecap, 8-1. UR finished 10-2 in the league, one game ahead of RPI (9-3). Rochester is 22-20 overall. St. Lawrence finished 3-9 in the Liberty League. The Saints are 14-21 overall.
Rochester's other three seniors also had big contributions in the sweep. Lauren Muni reached base four times – she walked and was hit by a pitch once in each game. Mackenzie Cronin had an RBI in game one and was hit by a pitch in game two, leading to another run. Laurelle Byrne-Cody scored two runs in game two as a pinch runner (and flex). She was also in the middle of two double plays – one in each game.
Eleni Wechsler picked up the game one win. In seven innings, she scattered eight hits, walked one, and struck out six. All four runs were unearned. At the plate, Wechsler was 2-6 with an RBI and a run scored.
Elizabeth Bourne won game two. After a shaky first inning – four hits by the Saints led to a 1-0 lead – she settled down. She allowed only two more base hits over the next six innings, walked three, and fanned three. She was 1-2 with an RBI.
For St. Lawrence, Emma Gailey was undone by her defense in the fourth inning. Rochester scored five runs – all unearned – to take a 6-0 lead. Kibling hit a two-run single to make it 3-0 (she homered leading off the third). She scored on a single by Harleigh Kaczegowicz. Gailey departed after the single that scored Kibling. In 3.2 innings, she allowed seven hits, five runs, walked one, and struck out one. Allie Courtwright relieved. SLU committed two more errors and Courtwright hit Muni leading to two more runs.
They got most of it back in the top of the fifth. With two down and Carly Dziekan on first after a single, Kylee Knight singled. A wild pitch advanced both runners and Elle Gray drew a walk to load the bases. Mylea Mann's flyball was dropped and all three runs came home. Mann scored when a single by Emma Reakes was bobbled in the outfield.
Wechsler got out of it, then escaped a mini-jam in the sixth. Courtwright led off with a double. After a strikeout, Dziekan grounded to Kibling at short. She faked to first, then caught Courtwright in a rundown for the second out. Pinch-hitter Jacqueline Dufour reached on an error that left runners at the corners. Wechsler fanned Knight to end the inning. 
In the Saint seventh, Gray singled to right. Mann hit a 1-0 grounder to short that Kibling turned into a 6-4-3 double play with Byrne-Cody as the pivot at second and Muni at first. A flyout ended the game.
SLU jumped ahead, 1-0, in game two. Knight doubled to right center and took third on Gray's roller to the right side. Mann singled home the run. Emma Reakes followed with a single. After a strikeout, Courtwright singled up the middle to load the bases. Dziekan hit into a force play to end the inning.
Rochester tied it in the third. Kibling doubled to left center and was bunted to third. She scored on Kaczegowicz's sac fly to left.
From the first inning through one batter in the fourth, Bourne retired nine of 11. Dziekan put the Saints in good position to go ahead with one down in the fourth. She tripled down the right field line. Bourne retired pinch-hitter Dufour on a soft liner to Wechsler at second, then struck out Madison Yarborough.
SLU had only four baserunners over the last three innings. Mann walked with two down in the fifth, Courtwright walked with one out in the sixth, and an error and walk put two aboard in the seventh with two down. Courtwright was doubled off first in the sixth. Dziekan lined the ball into center field. Byrne-Cody charged in, made a nice running catch, and threw on the move to just nip her at first for the double play.
UR broke the tie with four in the fourth, then added two unearned runs in the fifth, and an earned run in the sixth. In the fourth, Courtwright dug a hole for herself by hitting three batters: Cronin leading off, Muni with one out, and pinch-hitter Rachel Pletz. Bourne's sac fly broke the 1-1 tie. Kibling quickly doubled to left center for a 3-0 lead and scored on Shelby Corning's single up the middle.
Two runs scored in the fifth when Wechsler's flyball into the gap was dropped. In the sixth, Kaczegowicz led off with a single, advanced on a two-out walk, then scored on Wechsler's single to left.
