Yellowjackets Defeat #2 Washington University, Falls to CWRU

From University of Rochester Athletics

The University of Rochester's Softball team finished up another 2-game day in Florida this afternoon. The Yellowjackets defeated the #2 ranked team in the country Washington University 4-2 in the second game of the day. In the first game, the Yellowjackets were on the wrong end of three home-runs and fell to Case Western Reserve University 9-3.

Against #2 Wash U, Sam Malecki took home the win. She pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 6 hits, and 2 earned runs. Eleni Wechsler came in for the save; pitching 2.2 strong innings allowing only 1 hit and striking out one batter. Both pitchers helped slow down the high-powered Wash U offense throughout the game.

The Yellowjackets scored first, scoring 2 runs in the 2nd inning powered by a two-run homerun from freshman Gianna Melillo. In the top of the 3rd, freshman Rachael Pletz doubled down the lf line, scoring Courtney Semkewyc. For the third straight inning, UR put a run on the scoreboard; Melillo homered for the second time in the game hitting a solo shot over the center field wall in the top of the 4th.

Wash U scored one run in both the bottom of the 4th and 5th innings. But it was not enough for the #2 ranked team nationally to overcome the 4 run deficit. Wash U has now lost their past 2 games in the UAA tournament after starting the season off 8-0.

In the first game of the day, Rochester came back from allowing two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead into the 3rd inning. Gianna Melillo reached on a fielder's choice and Shelby Corning singled down the lf line; both eventually scoring on an error and a wild pitch respectively. Eleni Wechsler singled to right field, driving in Harleigh Kaczegowicz who reached on an error two batters earlier.

Case Western battled back in the bottom of the 3rd, blasting three homeruns in the inning totaling 5 runs, taking a 7-3 lead. Eventually scoring two more runs in the bottom of the 4th to hold on to defeat the Yellowjackets.

The team's record is now 3-5 after the two games this afternoon. Case Western improves to 6-7 and Wash U falls to 10-2.
