Annie Wennerberg’s Walk-Off Highlights Final Day Against #23 Emory

Case Western Reserve University senior Annie Wennerberg hit a walk-off solo home run to help the Spartans split the season series against 23rd-ranked Emory University on Saturday afternoon at Mather Park.

The Spartans and Eagles resumed their suspended game from yesterday, with Emory winning 7-0. Following the completion of that game, they played their scheduled doubleheader. Emory came away with the victory in the early contest, 15-3, but the Spartans rallied back in second game of the doubleheader to win 5-4 on the walk-off home run from Wennerberg.

CWRU now has an overall record of 9-7, including a 2-2 mark in the UAA. Emory moved to 17-9 overall on the season and also has a 2-2 conference record.

Game 2 (3/24): Emory 7, CWRU 0
The second game of Friday's doubleheader was a pitcher's duel, has both teams were held scoreless until the fifth inning when Emory erupted with five runs. The Eagles added two more runs in the seventh to secure the victory.

Junior Katie Dzierwa started and allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out two batters. Sami Feller earned the win for Emory, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Game 1 (3/25): Emory 15, CWRU 3
The Eagles scored nine runs throughout the first innings, until the Spartans responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Nicole Carty hit an RBI  groundout to score junior Grace Tritchler from third.

CWRU added two more in fifth when sophomore Nicole Doyle and Tritchler delivered RBI singles to cut the Eagles lead to 9-3. Emory went on to score six more runs in the seventh to secure the victory.

Freshman Callie Wang started and took the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the year. Feller earned her second win in as many game to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Game 2 (3/25): CWRU 5, Emory 4
In the final game of the four-game series, the Spartans fell behind early with Emory scoring three runs in the top of the first.

CWRU then got on the board in the third inning when Tritchler hit an RBI single to right field to score to score Doyle from third. The Eagles came back the following to score a run to extend their lead to 4-1.

The Spartans broke out in the fourth fifth inning to score three runs, including a perfectly designed double steal where Tritchler stole second and junior Maren Waldner stole home.

The game remained knotted at 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh inning. Wennerberg stepped to the plate to lead off the inning and crushed the first pitch in the at-bat over the right field wall to give the Spartans the walk-off 5-4 victory.

The home run was Wennerberg's first on the season and 32nd of her Spartan career.

Wennerberg also got the start on the mound in the final game, going 6.1 innings and striking out two batters. Dzierwa entered the game in relief to get the final two outs of the seventh inning which earned her the victory. She improved to 2-3 overall with the win. Britney File took the loss for Emory and fell to 7-4 on the season.
