Spartans Secure First Win of 2017 Season With 12-0 Victory Over Rutgers-Camden

The Case Western Reserve University softball team split their final two games at the Beach Blast Tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Saturday afternoon, winning 12-0 against Rutgers University-Camden, but falling 4-3 to Randolph-Macon College in the second contest.

The Spartans now stand at 1-3 overall on the year, while Rutgers-Camden fell to 2-2 and Randolph-Macon moved to 9-0 on the year.

Case Western Reserve junior Grace Tritchler led the Spartans during the day, hitting her second home run of the season during the second game, and finishing the two games a combined three-for-six with one home run and two runs batted in.

Game 1: CWRU 12, Rutgers-Camden 0
The Spartans scored two runs in the fourth inning and added 10 in the seventh to secure a 12-0 win over the Raptors in the opening game.

Senior Annie Wennerberg went six innings, holding Rutgers-Camden scoreless on one hit and a walk, while striking out six batters. It was her first win of the season and 42nd of her Spartan career.

Freshman Callie Wang got the Spartan on the board in the fourth with an RBI single, with the team going on to score one more off of a double from freshman Nicole Carty.

CWRU broke out for 10 runs in the seventh, including RBI's from freshman Emily Nishiwaki, sophomore Nicole Doyle, Tritchler, junior Maren Waldner, Wang, sophomore Sharilyn Sakamoto, freshman Melissa Cuellar and Wennerberg.

Game 2: Randolph-Macon 4, CWRU 3
The Spartans fell behind early in the second game of the day, after the Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the first inning off of a triple from Diane McDaniel.

CWRU responded in the second inning with a solo home run from Tritchler, her second of the season and 15th of her career.  A RBI groundout added a run in the third to increased Randolph-Macon's lead to 3-1.

The Spartans tied the game in the fifth when Doyle hit a double that drove in junior Katie Wede and Nishiwaki. However, CWRU gave up a run in the sixth that sealed the victory for the Yellow Jackets.

Wennerberg started and pitched two innings, before junior Katie Dzierwa entered the game in relief to pitch the next four innings. Dzierwa took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) and struck out one batter. Wang pitched a scoreless seventh inning and allowed only two hits.
