Emory junior Audrey Weller registered a complete-game eight hitter in the second contest against Lynchburg that gave the Eagles a split of a Friday afternoon doubleheader. Weller's effort fueled a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap while the Hornets posted a six-inning 12-4 verdict in the opener. Emory, ranked 18th in the D-III ranks, stands 11-7 on the season while No. 25 Lynchburg claims a 15-3 ledger.
Weller pocketed her first victory of the season in two decisions, striking out two while issuing a pair of walks. Both of the runs that she gave up were unearned. After seeing Lynchburg score once in the top of the first, the Eagles tallied all of their runs in the bottom of the frame with senior second baseman Amy Wray delivering a two-out three-run double that plated junior Ashley Powers, freshman Jessie Michael and senior Taylor Forte. The score remained that way until the top of the seventh when the Hornets pushed home a run on a sacrifice fly. LC had a runner on second with two out, but Weller induced a game-ending ground out to seal the victory.
In the opener, freshman Jessy McLean and Michael accounted for five of Emory's eight hits with McLean going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs while Michael came through with a pair of safeties while driving in one run. Trailing by a 1-0 count, the Eagles erupted for all four of their runs in the third inning. After sophomore Cassie Baca and Forte led off with back-to-back singles, McLean socked a two-run double. McLean eventually scored on an error by the LC right fielder while a two-bagger by Michael accounted for the final run with sophomore Sarah Flanders crossing the plate. The Hornets scored once in the fourth before knotting the score in their half of the fifth.
Lynchburg made the most of a pair of Emory fielding miscues in the top of six, scoring eight times to blow the game wide open. A three-run double by Logan Walker was a key hit in the uprising. Senior Brittany File, who came on in relief in the first inning suffered the loss in the circle, her third setback in nine decisions.
