Maeve Garvey Blast Gives Maroons 3-2 Win Over Hendrix

From University of Chicago Athletics

Maeve Garvey hit the go-ahead home run to give the University of Chicago softball team a 3-2 win over Hendrix College on Friday.

The Maroons improved their season record to 7-2.

Hendrix was poised to do damage in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the Warriors drew a run-scoring walk to take a 1-0 lead. That's when the Maroons made the call to the pen to bring in junior pitcher Molly Moran. She expertly escaped the jam by striking out the next two batters to strand the bases full.

The Warriors made the score 2-0 in the top of the fourth, but UChicago found its answer in the bottom of the frame. A walk, a single and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position. Sophomore first base Carly Schulz knocked a RBI single up the middle, and junior catcher Sara Koniewicz tied it up with a sacrifice fly.

Garvey provided the winning run in dramatic fashion. The sophomore outfielder stepped to the plate leading off the bottom of the sixth inning, and immediately jacked a solo homer to center field. Garvey is riding a nine-game hitting streak while leading the team in batting average (.563) and RBI (10).

Freshman pitcher Megan Stoppelman entered in the seventh to close out the game in the circle. Hendrix tallied a single followed by a stolen base to make things interesting. But Stoppelman locked in, striking out one and forcing a grounder back to herself to clinch the 3-2 victory.

Both teams ended up with five hits, with Garvey providing two. Moran got the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. She lasted 3.2 innings and struck out six batters to go with one run, two hits and one walk. Stoppelman earned her second save of the year with one inning, one strikeout and one hit allowed. Sophomore Jordyne Prussak started the game, going 2.1 innings with one run, two hits, two walks and one strikeout.
