The Washington University in St. Louis softball team recorded a four-game series sweep with Brandeis following an 8-0 win in five innings Sunday at home.
Junior Maggie Clapp (8-8) tossed her second-straight complete-game shutout allowing two hits. Clapp did not walk a batter with four strikeouts. She moved into eighth all-time in school history in wins (23) and ninth in complete games (13).
WashU won its sixth-straight game to improve to 22-11 and 8-4 in the UAA, while Brandeis fell to 11-16, 4-9 in UAA play. The Bears remain in first place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings with four games left at New York University next weekend.
WashU scored four runs on one hit and took advantage of four errors in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Hera Tang had the lone RBI for the Bears in the first. The lead grew to 5-0 in the third after senior Halle Steinberg doubles to left center to drive in Mikaela Arredondo.
The Bears added three runs in the fifth to round out the scoring. Arredondo doubled to left field to push across the sixth run, and then Steinberg drove in a run with a sac fly. Sophomore Taylor Arends singled down the left field line with runners at second and third to end the game.
Arends was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as WashU had nine hits in the win. Arends hit .643 (9-for-14) with three RBIs in the four-game sweep, recording four multi-hit games. She has taken over the team lead and ranks fourth in the UAA in batting average (.413).
Arredondo added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and two RBIs.
WashU closes out a 12-game homestand against Greenville College on Tuesday, April 25. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
