Spartans Sweep Thursday Slate; Improve to 9-1

The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Thursday in Tucson, Arizona, as the offense erupted in a 13-6 win over Augsburg University in the first game of the day, and then picked up a 6-2 win over Macalester College in the late contest.

The Spartans improved to 9-1 on the season with the two wins, while the Eagles dropped to 7-6 overall and the Scots fell to 6-9 on the season.

Game 1: CWRU 13, Augsburg 6
Case Western Reserve University junior shortstop Nicole Doyle led the Spartans at the plate with a three-for-five performance in which she drove three runs, including two doubles.

The Spartans jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two innings, including a RBI's from senior Grace Tritchler, Doyle and senior Maren Waldner.

The Eagles cut in to the lead in the third with two-run homer, but that was quickly erased in the following half-inning when CWRU put up four runs in the fourth. Waldner started the scoring in the inning with a double to right center to score senior Katie Wede. Tritchler followed with an RBI single to score Waldner, then sophomore Nicole Carty and freshman Dusstyn Reynolds hit back-to-back doubles to increase the Spartan lead to 8-3.

CWRU added another two runs in the fifth after a two-run double from Doyle that scored sophomore Ilissa Hamilton and freshman Arisa Cleaveland.

Augsburg attempted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run homer from Jacquline Nichols, her second of the game, but the Spartans answered again in the top of the seventh with three more runs to secure the 13-6 victory.

Waldner and Reynolds each went three-for-five in the game, while Tritchler went two-for-five with three runs batted in.

Hamilton pitched the first six innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits, while striking out eight batters. She improved to 3-0 on the season with the victory. Senior Katie Dzierwa wrapped up the victory with a scoreless inning of relief, yielding two walks and striking out three.

Game 2: CWRU 6, Macalester 2
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Waldner doubled to center field to score Cleaveland. Tritchler followed with a single to left field to score Waldner and then Carty stepped up laced a double to center field to Tricthler to put CWRU ahead at 3-0.

The Spartans added three more runs in the top of the fourth, including a two-run RBI single from Wede, which would increase the CWRU lead to 6-0.

The Scots got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with two runs, but it wasn't enough as the Spartans were able to hold on for the 6-2 win.

Freshman Sidney Brannam started and went five innings, scattering two hits and struck out three batters. She improved to 5-1 with the victory. Carty pitched the final two innings of the game in relief, allowing two and zero earned runs, while striking out two.

At the plate, Waldner went two-for-three with two runs batted in and one run scored, while Wede added a one-for-day with two runs batted in.
