Sarah Miller’s Two Home Runs Highlight CWRU Sweep Over Brandeis on Friday

Case Western Reserve University freshman Sarah Miller hit two home runs and drove in three RBI's, as the Spartans swept a doubleheader over Brandeis University at Mather Park on Friday afternoon. CWRU picked up an 8-0 win in six innings over the Judges in the early contest, and a 3-1 victory in the late affair.

The two wins raised the Spartans' record to 15-6 overall and 2-4 in the UAA, while Brandeis fell to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the two losses.

Miller led the Spartans at the plate with a three-for-five performance, including two home runs and three runs batted it. The two home runs were the first of her collegiate career.

Game 1: CWRU 8, Brandeis 0 (6 innings)
The Spartans scored all of their runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to secure the 8-0 win over the Judges in the first game of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton went the distance in the game, holding Brandeis scoreless on four hits and two walks, while striking out four batters. It was her sixth win of the season and the teams second shutout of the season.

Miller, who went one-for two in the game with two RBI's, got the Spartans on the board in the second inning with a two run homer to left field that scored freshman Sydney Wagner. The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Case Western Reserve broke out for three runs in the frame, all of which came via a three run homer from senior Grace Tritchler that scored senior Maren Waldner and freshman Arisa Cleaveland. The Spartans went on to score three more runs in the sixth, including a two-run RBI single from Waldner and an RBI double from Tritchler to put the run-rule into effect.

Scottie Todd started and suffered the loss for Brandeis in the first game, dropping to 1-3 on the season.

Game 2: CWRU 3, Brandeis 1
Case Western Reserve sophomore Nicole Carty led the Spartans at the plate in the second game, as she went one-for-three with two RBI's, including the go-ahead two-run home in the bottom of the sixth.

The Judges got on the board first after an error allowed Keri Lehtonen to score, giving Brandeis the early 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Miller drilled her second home run of the day to right center field, evening the score at 1-1.

The game stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Tritchler started the inning with single to left field, then was subbed out for sophomore Caitlin Smith to pinch-run. After a sacrifice from freshman Dusstyn Reynolds that advanced Smith to second, Carty stepped up and delivered the go-ahead two run home run to center field.

Miller finished the game two-for-three at the plate with one home run, one RBI and one run scored.

Freshman Sidney Brannam struck out one batter and allowed one unearned on four hits during her seven innings, earing the win to improve to 7-3 on the year.

Callie MacDonald was credited with the loss for the Judges, falling to 1-4 on the year.
