Spartans Clinch Series With Sweep at NYU on Saturday

The Case Western Reserve University softball team clinched the season series against New York University as the Spartans swept the Violets on Saturday. CWRU won the early contest 9-2, and then earned its fourth shutout of the season with a 6-0 win in the second contest.

With the sweep, the Spartans improved to 20-7 overall and 7-5 in the UAA, while the Violets dropped to 12-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Game 1: CWRU 9, NYU 2
Case Western Reserve collected nine hits, en route to a 9-2 win over New York in the early game on Saturday.

The Spartans were able to cash in on four runs in the first inning after senior Katie Wede scored on an error by the Violets second baseman, then freshman Sarah Miller drilled a double to left center to score freshman Arisa Cleaveland and junior Nicole Doyle capped off the scoring in the inning with a single through the left side of the infield to score senior Grace Tritchler and Miller.

NYU struck for a run in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Spartan lead to 4-1. In the third, Doyle drove in her third run of the game after a single through the left side to score Miller and then Wede singled to score Doyle, giving the team a 6-1 lead after three innings.

CWRU added two more runs in the top of the fourth after an error by the Violets right fielder allowed senior Maren Waldner and Tritchler to score. NYU scored a run in the fifth, but that was quickly erased after another run by the Spartans in the seventh, securing the 9-2 CWRU victory.

Wede finished the game three-for-five at the plate with one run scored, while Doyle went two-for-four with one run and three RBI's. Miller added a two-for-three game at the plate with one double, one triple, one RBI and two runs scored.

Sophomore Ilissa Hamilton earned the win in the game, allowing only one earned on four hits and two walks while striking out seven. She improved to 8-4 on the season. New York starter Diana King took the loss, falling to 1-3.

Game 2: CWRU 6, NYU 0
Wede paced the Spartans at the plate in the second game, going four-for-five with two runs scored and freshman Jordan Gross hit her first collegiate home run to lead the Spartans to a 6-0 victory.

CWRU broke through in the top of the first when Cleaveland hit an RBI single, Miller tripled and then Doyle singled up the middle to put the Spartans up 3-0.

The score remained 3-0 until the top of the fourth, when Gross hit her first home run as Spartan to left field. Cleveland followed later in the inning with a fielder's choice that scored Wede to give CWRU a 6-0 advantage.

Freshman Sidney Brannam went the distance for a nine-hit shutout, the Spartans' fourth shutout of the 2018 campaign. She pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing nine hits and striking out four, while walking only one batter, en route to earning the win to improve to 10-3 for the year.

Olivia Mould took the loss for NYU in the game, falling to 1-2 for the season.
