Spartans Extend Winning Streak to Six; Blank Chicago in Saturday Doubleheader

The Case Western Reserve University softball team extended their winning streak to six games and improve to 29-8 with two games remaining in the 2018 regular-season after blanking the University of Chicago 6-0 and 11-0 during a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Illinois.

With the two losses, the Maroons dropped to 19-13 overall on the season.

Game 1: CWRU 6, Chicago 0
The Spartans made the most of their eight hits and took advantage of four errors and two walks from the Maroons to claim a 6-0 win over Chicago in the early game.

CWRU broke through for a run in the top of the second when sophomore Ilissa Hamilton stole second and then sophomore Nicole Carty ended up scoring on a throwing error by the Maroons shortstop to take the early lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Hamilton reached base on another throwing error by the shortstop that allowed Carty to score. Freshman Dusstyn Reynolds followed with an RBI single up the middle to score Hamilton.

The Spartans added two more runs in the fifth when sophomore Nicole Doyle drilled a double to center field, scoring senior Maren Waldner and sophomore Caitlin Smith. CWRU closed out the scoring in the sixth after freshman Arisa Cleaveland reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Hamilton to score.

Hamilton started and went six innings on the mound, allowing only two hits and a walk, while striking out 11 batters. She improved to 13-4 on the season with the victory. Senior Katie Dzierwa pitched one inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Molly Moran took the loss for Chicago, falling to 10-5 for the season.

Doyle finished the game two-for-three at the plate with two runs batted in, while Hamilton went one-for-two at the plate with one walk and two runs scored.

Game 2: CWRU 11, Chicago 0 (6 innings)
The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the second, third and fifth innings, and then erupted for a five-run sixth inning to secure a 11-0 win in six innings over the Maroons during the second game of the day.

Freshman Sidney Brannam pitched the first five innings of the game, holding Chicago scoreless on six hits and a walk, while striking out two batters. It was her 14th win on the season, as she is now 14-4 overall on the campaign. Sophomore Anna Goff pitched one inning in relief and allowed only hit.

Senior Grace Tritchler, who went three-for-four in the game with three RBI's, two runs scored and one home run, got the Spartans on the board in the second inning with a solo home run to left field. Reynolds followed later in the inning with a single up the middle to score Hamilton, giving CWRU the 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the third when Tritchler and freshman Sarah Miller each hit RBI singles to increase the advantage to 4-0.

The Spartans added another two runs in the fifth after a two-run home run from Doyle. CWRU then put the run-rule into effect in the sixth after they erupted for five runs in the inning, including a RBI single from Reynolds, a two-run double from Waldner and a RBI double from Tritchler.

Megan Stoppelman started and suffered the loss for Chicago in the second game, dropping to 3-7 on the season.
