Emory Sweeps Doubleheader Versus Covenant College

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory softball team closed out a season-opening eight-game home stand with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader sweep of Covenant College.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 6-2 following 5-1 and 2-0 victories over the Scots who dipped to 6-10.

In the opening game, freshman pitcher Jacqueline Spizizen pocketed her fourth win of the year in five decisions after throwing three hitless innings of relief, striking out six batters. Junior Toko Miller started in the circle and went the first four frames, allowing just one hit and one run. With the scored tied, 1-1, Emory pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of errors by the Scots while seeing sophomore catcher Greta Wilker and junior center fielder Sarah Flanders deliver run-producing singles. Both Wilker and sophomore third baseman Jessy McLean went 2-for-4 at the plate, with the Eagles finishing with seven safeties.

In the finale, junior Audrey Weller and Spizizen combined for a four-hit shutout, the team's fifth whitewash of the year. Weller came away with the victory after hurling 5 2/3 innings in a starting capacity, surrendering four hits and fanning four.  Spizizen earned the save, going the last 1 1/3 frames and striking out two. The Eagles scored the game's only runs in their half of the fourth when McLean socked a one-out double and then moved to third following a single by freshman Allie Moberg.  Junior Jenna Wilson and sophomore Sami Feller were then inserted as pinch runners for McLean and Moberg, respectively.  After Feller swiped second base, an infield out by Natalie Arreguin allowed Wilson to cross the plate as well as an opportunistic Feller.
