From Emory University Athletics

The Emory softball team opened University Athletic Association play on a successful note Friday with a sweep of a home doubleheader against Case Western Reserve University. The Eagles captured a six-inning 8-0 decision in the opener before notching a 2-1 verdict in the finale. Emory now stands 11-7 in overall play while the Spartans slip to 13-4.

Junior shortstop Cassie Baca knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the second inning of the nightcap with a two-out bases-loaded single that scored sophomore Sarh Katz, snapping a 1-1 deadlock. The Eagles posted a 10-hit attack with Baca going 3-for-3 at the plate and Sarah Flanders and Katz each hitting safely twice. Junior Toko Miller drew the start in the circle and raised her record to 4-2, tossing 6 2/3 innings and allowing four hits while striking out three.  Miller retired 14 straight Spartans before they strung back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the seven that put runners at the corners. Miller gave way to freshman Jacqueline Spizizen who earned her second save of the campaign after inducing a game-ending pop foul to catcher Lana Herrmann.

Sophomores Greta Wilker and Sami Feller, along with junior Jenna Wilson, combined for combined for seven of Emory's 10 hits in the first game, with Wilker posting a 3-for-4 mark at the plate while also scoring a pair of runs. Emory took control of the game with a six-run blitz in the bottom of the fourth, with the big blow a grand slam by Herrmann that staked the Eagles to a 5-0 edge. After Herrmann's round tripper, her second of the season, Flanders tripled and then crossed the plate after beating the throw home following a strikeout where the CWRU catcher had to throw down to first base.  Spizizen went all six frames and won for the sixth time in 10 outings, surrendering just two hits and fanning a pair.
