Emory Splits Doubleheader At Piedmont

From Emory University Athletics

Junior outfield Jenna Wilson picked up four hits and scored twice, and eight different players knocked in runs in leading the Emory softball team to a second-game win and a split of a Thursday evening doubleheader at Piedmont College. The Lions topped Emory, 4-0, in the first contest before the Eagles pounded out a six-inning, 11-3 triumph in the nightcap.  Emory stands 22-9 on the season while Piedmont closed out its campaign at 24-18.

Wilson's performance in the finale extended her hitting streak to seven games and represented her 11th multi-hit outing of the year. Five other Eagles recorded a pair of safeties including sophomore Greta Wilker who scored three runs and sophomores Sami Feller and Jessy McLean, both of whom crossed the plate twice. Emory jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as McLean, freshman Allie Moberg and junior Sam Vincent all came through with two-out RBI singles. Wilson led off the second with a single and proceeded to steal her 18th and 19th bases of the year, whereupon she scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sarah Katz.

The Eagles stretched their cushion to 7-1 after a three-run fourth that saw Wilker and Moberg drive in runs with singles. The Eagles closed out their scoring with a four-run uprising in the sixth, with Cassie Baca doubling in a run while a Wilson single accounted for another score.  Emory finished the contest with a season-high 15 hits which allowed freshman pitcher Madison Schaefer to come away with her first win as a collegian after tossing a complete game that saw her give up nine hits while fanning one.

In the opener, Piedmont junior pitcher Melissa Eckman crafted the complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out two as she upped her season record to 17-9. The Lions claimed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Hannah Hoban smacked a two-run homer. In the sixth, the Lions added to their advantage when Linsay Link delivered a two-run single.  Emory threatened in its half of the seventh, loading the bases with two out, but Eckman got out of the jam. Jenna Wilson collected three of the Eagles' five hits while Cassie Baca and Jessy McLean accounted for the other two. Jaqueline Spizizen took the loss in the circle, her fifth against 14 wins, tossing four innings and allowing two runs and three hits.
