The Emory softball team came through with its second straight series sweep of a University Athletic Association foe on Saturday after earning a pair of wins at Washington University. The Eagles ran their win streak to 10 games and upped its season record to 17-7, 8-0 in the league, following 9-0 (5 inns.) and 4-2 triumphs over the Bears who fell to 6-10 in overall play, 0-4 in the UAA.
Senior Janelle Turnquest collected two of Emory's 10 hits in the nightcap, including a solo homer, her first round tripper of the season, to lead off the sixth, snapping a 2-2 deadlock and giving the Eagles their winning margin. Sophomore Sara Katz when 3-for-3 at the plate with one run scored while Jessy McLean and Greta Wilker accounted for the team's other RBIs. Emory scored first when Katz raced home on a passed ball in the second, and added another tally the following inning when McLean's single plated Wilker.
Wash U knotted the score in its half of third, and it remained that way until Turnquest's blast. Emory added an insurance run in the seventh on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt off the bat of Wilker that allowed Jenna Wilson to score. Freshman pitcher Jacqueline Spizizenpocketed the win, her second of the day and third of the series, after three scoreless innings of relief that saw her strikeout one batter while surrendering three hits. Spizizen closed out the weekend not allowing an earned run over 17 innings of work, fanning 13 Bears while issuing just one walk and allowing eight hits en route to raising her season ledger to 11-4.
In the first game, the Eagles chalked up eight of their 11 hits in the third and fourth innings when they accounted for all of their scoring. Junior Sam Vincent, McLean and freshman Allie Moberg all hit safely twice to lead the attack with junior Cassie Baca, McLean and Turnquest all driving in a pair of runs. Emory made the most of a two-out WU fielding error in the top of the third which produced five unearned runs. McLean socked a run-producing double and Turnquest a RBI triple to highlight the uprising. The Eagles put the game out of reach the next inning by crossing the plate four more times with Baca igniting the rally with a two-run single, followed later by a RBI double by McLean. Spizizen went the first three innings, whiffing four while giving up one hit, to come away with the victory with senior Audrey Weller tossing the final two frames.
