The New York University softball team split it two games on Thursday, March 15, at the D9 Sunkissed Games in Kissimmee, FL.

The Violets (4-4) fell to SUNY Cortland (4-4) 6-0, but bounced back to defeat Marietta College (5-6) by the exact same score.

After managing only three hits in the opener, NYU exploded for 14 against Marietta. The combination of that offensive explosion and Diana King's complete-game shutout was more than enough to carry the Violets.

"It was nice to see us come back after dropping the opener," said Head Coach Now-Allah James. "Diana was tremendous on the mound and she got good support from our hitters."

Making her first mound appearance of the season, King dominated the Pioneer hitters. She struck out a career-high 10 batters, while only allowing two hits and two walks.  

Allyson Schmus, now hitting .556, led the Violets offense. She went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Her two-RBI double in the second inning was all the runs NYU needed.

In the opener, King had two of the Violets' three hits, with Courtney Friday providing the third.

"Of course we want to win every game, but we are battling and working hard to improve on a daily basis," James explained. "We are continuing to build a winning culture here, and I am happy with the progress we are showing."

INSIDE INFORMATION:

- Claire Stefanelli also had two RBIs in game two. She had two hits in the contest, as did Friday and Sage Scheiwiller.

- King had a double in each game and a stolen base in the opener. She is now batting .533.   

- Samantha Sicignano went 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI in game two.

- Kymber Yamamoto lashed her first collegiate base hit in the nitecap.
