Washington University in St. Louis junior shortstop Taylor Arends and senior utility player Maggie Clapp were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Arends, a first-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection, started 30 games at shortstop and hit .366 with one homerun and 21 RBIs. She ranked in the top-10 in the UAA in six categories: fourth in triples (2), sixth in on-base percentage (.438), seventh in runs (27), eighth in walks (9) and batting average, and 10thin RBIs. Arends was named the UAA Hitter of the Week on April 2 and May 7.
A two-time Academic All-District and Academic All-UAA selection, Arends has a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in psychological and brain sciences with a minor in healthcare management.
Clapp, a first-team all-UAA selection, recorded a 6-6 record with a 2.62 earned run average with two shutouts and six complete games. She registered a complete game in an 11-3 win over No. 5 Trine March 13, and tossed complete games in the final four starts of the season allowing three earned runs in 28 innings pitched. Clapp ranked second in the UAA in shutouts and fifth in wins. She was named the UAA Pitcher of the Week on May 7. Clapp also hit .337 at the plate with five doubles, one homerun and team-leading 24 RBI.
A three-time Academic All-UAA selection, Clapp has a 3.64 GPA while majoring in cognitive neuroscience with a minor in history.
To be eligible for nomination to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and must be a starter or an important reserve. Arends and Clapp are now eligible to be selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Team, announced June 5.
WashU posted a 16-14 overall record, and finished third in the UAA with an 8-8 mark. The Bears had the 11th-best strength of schedule (.612) in NCAA Division III.
