The Washington University in St. Louis softball team won three games on Saturday at Brandeis University to complete the four-game sweep of the Judges in Waltham, Mass.
WashU improved to 13-13 and 5-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Brandeis fell to 11-21 and 2-14 in the UAA.
WashU 6, Brandeis 1 – Game One
Senior Maggie Clapp (5-5) tossed a complete game allowing seven hits and one earned run in game one. Clapp threw 100 pitches (66 strikes) with three strikeouts and one walk. The complete game for Clapp was the 19thof her career, tied for ninth most in school history.
Senior Mackenzie Gauden was 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and two RBIs, while sophomore Hannah Bloom was 2-for-3 with an RBI in her third start of the season. WashU had nine hits in the victory.
Clapp grounded out in the first allowing sophomore Amy Walsh to score to make it 1-0. Brandeis tied the game in the second inning on a solo homerun by Marissa DeLaurentis.
WashU added two runs in the third inning after Gauden delivered a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side. Gauden has seven RBIs this season in 12 starts at first base. The tarp was pulled in the bottom of the third with WashU leading 3-1.
The Bears added an unearned run in the sixth, and then scored two runs in the seventh following a pinch-hit RBI single by senior Anna McKee and a double to center by Bloom.
WashU 3, Brandeis 0 – Game Two
McKee (7-6) posted a complete-game shutout in game two allowing three hits with one walk and six strikeouts. She threw 95 pitches (67 strikes) en route to the eighth shutout of her career.
WashU scored first after scoring an unearned run in the third. With McKee in control, the Bears added two runs in the seventh on one hit and took advantage of two errors. Clapp drove in a run with an infield single, and then McKee flied out to right to push another run across the plate.
Sophomore Mikaela Arredondo went 2-for-3, while Clapp was 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Bears were limited to four hits, and took advantage of six Brandeis errors.
WashU 5, Brandeis 2 – Game Three
McKee (8-6) picked up her second win of the day tossing five innings in relief in game three. She allowed two hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
WashU had seven hits in the win, including a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored by Walsh. Clapp was also 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Bears scored first for the fifth-straight game following a RBI groundout by junior Taylor Arends in the first inning.
Brandeis scored a run in the second and the third off freshman Abby Graegin, who lasted just two innings allowing three hits and two earned runs.
The Bears answered back with a pair of runs in fifth to take the 3-2 advantage. Freshman Natasha Ramakrishnanscored on an error by the third baseman, and then senior Ashley Madsen scored on a ground out by Clapp.
Clapp added a two-RBI single in the seventh to round out the scoring.
