The Washington University in St. Louis softball team held on for a win in game one to secure a series split with New York University Friday at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis.
WashU had 12 hits in the 9-7 win in game one, and then the Bears made a season-high six errors in a 5-1 loss in game two.
WashU fell to 14-14 and 6-8 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while New York dropped to 20-18 and 5-9 in the UAA and secured a spot in the ECAC postseason tourney.
WashU 9, New York 7 – Game One
Junior Taylor Arends went 3-for-3 with a homerun and four RBIs in the game one victory, while senior Ashley Madsen was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Hera Tangwas 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while sophomore Amy Walshwent 2-for-4 with two run scored and an RBI.
WashU scored two runs on two hits in the first inning. After a one-out walk, Tang drove in a run with a double to right center and then senior Anna McKee swapped places with Tang with a double to left.
NYU scored a pair of runs in the second, but WashU answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Walshdoubled to right to drive in a run, and then Arends launched a three-run homerun to make it 6-2.
Diana King trimmed the lead in half with a two-run homerun in the fourth. The homerun was her seventh of the season.
WashU answered right back with two runs, scoring on a wild pitch and then Tang fisted an RBI single to right to make it 8-4. Arends added an RBI single in the sixth to make it 9-4.
McKee (9-6) tossed a complete game allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs, while striking out six and walking three.
New York 5, WashU 1 – Game Two
The Bears scored first for the seventh-straight game after Walsh doubled in the first, stole third, and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Senior Maggie Clapp was perfect through the first 3 2/3 innings before allowing a two-out single. In the fifth, Clapp got a pair of outs but was hampered by three errors in the inning which led to four unearned runs.
New York added a run in the sixth to round out the scoring.
Clapp (5-6) tossed a complete game allowing seven hits and five runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Walsh was 2-for-3 with a run scored as WashU was held to just five hits.
WashU closes out regular-season play with a doubleheader against NYU on Saturday. The Bears celebrate Senior Day at 12:45 p.m. prior to first pitch of game one at 1 p.m.
