The Washington University in St. Louis softball team returned to the Midwest after a six-game road trip to Florida and picked up a pair of victories Sunday at the DePauw Invitational in Westfield, Ind.
WashU posted a 3-2 eight-inning win over host DePauw in game one, and then recorded an 11-3 six-inning victory over No. 5-ranked Trine in game two. Trine (12-3) entered the contest winners of eight of its last nine contests.
WashU 3, DePauw 2 – Eight innings
Junior Taylor Arends singled up the middle with one out in the eighth to drive in sophomore Amy Walsh for the eventual game-winning hit.
Senior Anna McKee (4-1) allowed five hits and two earned runs in the complete game victory. McKee struck out five and walked one. WashU was limited to four hits.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, the Bears took advantage of an error to tie the game. Freshman Julia Flores reached on an error to start the inning, and then after a sacrifice bunt, Walsh doubled to left to left to tie the game.
DePauw (4-6) got the lead back in the fourth, but McKee pinch-hit in the fifth and tied the contest with a homerun to the left. The homerun was the first of the season for WashU.
WashU 11, No. 5 Trine 3 – Six Innings
Walsh had a career day in the upset win against Trine going 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. She drove in junior Josi Elder with a single to center to end the game in the sixth.
Senior Maggie Clapp was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while senior Ashley Madsen was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. The Bears had 12 hits in the victory.
Trine struck in its first at-bat with a run off Clapp, but WashU answered back in the second with eight runs to take an 8-1 advantage.
Walsh drove in the first run with an RBI single, and then Arends was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. Clapp helped herself out with a two-RBI single up the middle, and then sophomore Mikaela Arredondo drove in two runs with a two-out RBI single.
Arends drove in a run with a groundout in the third to make it 9-3, and then freshman Natasha Ramakrishnan singled up the middle in the fifth to extend the advantage to 10-3.
Clapp (1-2) tossed a complete game allowing eight hits and three runs (two earned). She also struck out six and walked one.
