Brooke Orcutt’s Double-Double Lifts CWRU Past Emory, 67-62, on Seniors’ Day

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) recorded her third double-double of the season, and the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team defeated Emory University (Ga.), 67-62, on Seniors' Day at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans improve to 9-13 overall and 3-8 in the University Athletic Association, while the Eagles fall to 16-6 for the season and 5-6 in the UAA.

Orcutt totaled 18 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and four assists to lead three Spartans in double-figures. Sophomore post Laura Mummey (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) added a game-best 19 points with seven rebounds, and senior guard Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven boards, four assists, three blocked shots and three steals.

Mooney was honored prior to tip-off along with fellow seniors Lauren Elkin (Reisterstown, Md./Carver Center for Arts & Tech.) and Kathryn Huber (Tyler, Texas/Bishop T.K. Gorman).

Emory was led by Marissa Resnick and Gabi Whitmer, who each scored 10 points. The visitors shot just twice from the free throw line (0-for-2) as the Spartans committed just one shooting foul for the entire game.

The first half saw a combined 23 turnovers in 20 minutes as well as three lead changes and five ties in the opening 10. Emory grabbed a 10-8 advantage following a Gabi Whitmer layup at 12:02, but the Spartans tied the game on the following posession when Mummey scored a layup of her own at 11:39. From there, the Spartans would never trail again.

The hosts' gradual lead increase reached seven (27-20) following an Orcutt layup with 1:32 left before halftime. The Eagles then finished on a 6-2 run to put within 29-26 at the break.

The second half started with baskets from Mooney and Orcutt to extend the lead to five (33-28), but Emory would quickly tie the game at 33 at the 15:41 mark thanks to a three-pointer by Resnick and a layup by Ilene Tsao. From that stage on, the Spartans led.

Relying on a dominiating performance on the boards and a significant advantage at the free throw line, the Spartans scored seven in a row to lead 40-33 as Mummey hit a bucket at 13:28. The lead reached a game-high 10 (60-50) after two Mooney free throws with 1:25 remaining.

For the game, CWRU outrebounded Emory, 48-37, and held a +18 advantage in free throws.
