From NYU Athletics
The New York University women's basketball team earned the
season split with Carnegie Mellon University on Friday night,
February 7, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan. The #24
Violets defeated the Tartans thanks to some late heroics from
sophomore co-captain guard Maya Wasowicz, who hit
the game-winning three-point basket with just 13 seconds
remaining.
NYU (17-2, 6-2 University Athletic Association) found itself down
by three points with just 1:16 remaining in the contest after being
up on the Tartans (11-8, 2-6 UAA) by as much as 17 points. Despite
losing the early lead, the Violets stayed within striking distance
until Wasowicz finally put them ahead with her game-winning
shot.
"My teammates did a great job of finding me," said Wasowicz. "I
shot it just like we do in practice and thank God it went in. This
is what we play for."
The Violets controlled much of the first half, although Carnegie
Mellon did head into the lockerroom on a 7-0 run, and led 40-35 at
the break.
Once the second half began, NYU jumped all over the Tartans by
going on a 15-5 run and taking its largest lead of the contest at
17 with 15:37 remaining. Following that, Carnegie Mellon went on a
run of its own and eventually tied the game at 71-71 with 3:55 left
in the second half.
The Violets stayed consistent, though, shooting a season-best 85.0
percent from the foul line. They also just edged the Tartans on the
boards, 38-37. In addition, NYU shot 41.4 percent from beyond the
arc. Overall, three Violets scored in double-figures, while eight
players scored at least six points.
"I was proud of us for weathering their late run and coming back,"
said Head Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "I'm proud of
Maya for making that huge shot and her teammates for putting her in
the position to make that shot. Our team chemistry is great. This
is a team that truly doesn't care who gets the credit."
