Big Second Half Pushes Rochester Past NYU, 71-62

From University of Rochester Athletics

Ally Zywicki and Blair Landolfi combined for 27 points in the second half to spark the University of Rochester to a 71-62 women's basketball victory over New York University at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.

Zywicki finished with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Landolfi had 13 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Kelsey Hurley scored 14 points. Rochester won its third straight game. The Yellowjackets improved to 11-13 overall, 5-8 in the University Athletic Association.

Megan Dawe led NY with 19 points. Kaitlyn Read had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Violets (19-5, 8-5 UAA). NYU was ranked third in the latest East Region poll conducted by the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Committee. The Violets are chasing a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. They conclude the regular season at Brandeis next Saturday.

Zywicki scored 16 points in the second half on three field goals – one a 3-pointer – and nine of 13 from the foul line. Landolfi had 11 points, one basket and nine of nine from the line. Hurley scored eight of her 14 in the second half.

Rochester made 31 of 39 free throw attempts (79.5%), 23 of 30 in the second half (76.7%). NYU was 14 of 21 from the line (67%). The Yellowjackets held a commanding 55-33 edge on the backboards and scored 19 second chance points off 17 offensive rebounds.

Loren Wagner grabbed 10 rebounds for Rochester, marking her 12th straight game with 10 or more boards. Katie Weiner had seven rebounds and Tylar Guerrieri grabbed six to accompany eight points.

Zywicki made two free throws as part of an 11-0 run midway through the second half that turned a 41-36 deficit into a 47-41 Rochester lead with 9:46 left. A layup by Dawe gave the Violets that five-point edge, but she drew her fourth personal foul three minutes later and went to the bench for seven minutes.

Read's layup made it a four-point game, 49-45, Rochester with 8:33 left. Zywicki was long on a jumper from in front of her own bench. Landolfi collected a weak side layup, put it back in, and drew a foul on Lindsey Oldshue. That gave Rochester a seven point edghe, 52-45, which grew to 10 after one free throw from Weiner, then a layup by Weiner from Landolfi.

NYU narrowed a double-figure gap down to eight (57-49 at 4:16), then finally seven, 62-55 with 1:37 left, after three-pointers from Amy Harioka. Rochester sank nine of 12 from the line in the last 86 seconds.
