Junior Khadijah Sayyid led three
Emory double-figure scorers with 21 points and the Emory women's
basketball remained undefeated on Saturday after battling its way
to a win over Berry College. Emory upped its overall record
to 3-0 after recording a 75-70 decision over the Vikings who
slipped to 2-1.
Sayyid concluded the contest by hitting seven-of-13 from the
floor, including two three-point field goal attempts in four
opportunities en route to notching her third straight outing of 20
or more points. Junior Ilene
Tsao aided in the victory by racking up a season-high 16
points, 14 coming in the second half, while
freshman Mikaila Schmitt rounded out the
trio of double-digit scorers with 12 points.
Emory shot 46.2 percent from the floor (30-of-65) compared to
Berry's 36.5 percent (19-of-52). Both teams connected on 50
percent from beyond the arc with the Eagles converting eight-of-16
and Berry 6-of-12. Emory finished with a 40-38 edge in
rebounding and was paced in that category by Sayyid's eight
caroms. Schmitt chipped in seven boards while
junior Sarah Arington and
freshman Dumebi Egbuna each snagged six
rebounds.
Behind eight points by Schmitt and seven by Sayyid, Emory
took a 34-25 lead into halftime. Holding an 8-5 lead, the
Eagles held the Viking scoreless for over five minutes in rattling
off a 9-0 spurt, with freshman Kennede
Miller scoring five points in that stretch, that boosted
their lead to 17-5 with 12:00 left in the opening
stanza. After a bucket by BC's Megan Casey narrowed the
gap to 10 points, Schmitt came through with back-to-back buckets
and sophomore Shellie Kaniut knocked down a
triple to extend the Emory cushion to 24-7. A basket by
Sayyid gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 31-13 with
5:00 remaining before Berry answered with a 12-3 burst to close out
the half.
Sayyid opened the second half by draining a three pointer,
extending the Emory lead to a dozen points, but the Vikings
eventually used an 11-3 sprint, capped by a three pointer by Mel
McLean, to slice a 50-38 Emory lead to just three points with 10:38
on the clock. Emory regained control of the game as Tsao
scored seven points during a 12-0 Eagle barrage that pushed their
lead back to 15 points with 7:51 on the clock. A
triple by Tsao with 5:57 remaining put Emory ahead by a 69-52
count, but Berry mounted another comeback bid, creeping to within
six points with 2:13 left in the contest. Sayyid gave
Emory some breathing room by hitting a clutch three pointer with
1:28 on the clock, boosting its lead to nine points.
