From Emory University Athletics

Junior Khadijah Sayyd scored 13 of her team-high 20 points in the second half in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a Friday evening win at Case Western Reserve. The Eagles raised their overall record to 12-11, 4-8 in the University Athletic Association, following a 61-60 decision over the Spartans who fell to 7-16 in overall contests, 1-11 in the league.

Sayyid hit back-to-back baskets that snapped a 54-54 deadlock, propelling Emory to a four-point lead with 3:19 left in the game. The Eagles boosted their lead to 60-54 with 2:04 on the clock after a bucket by freshman Dumebi Egbuna. The Spartans crept back to within two points with 13 ticks remaining, and when Emory missed the second of a one-and-one, the home squad had a chance to knot the game. However, CWRU could only come up with a two-point basket, giving the Eagles their fourth road win of the season.

Sayyid closed out the evening hitting eight-of-18 from the field, two-of-seven from three-point range, in registering her 17th double-figure scoring effort of the year and sixth of 20 or more points. Junior Ilene Tsao was the other Emory player to finish with double-digit scoring with 10 points while tying Egbuna for the team lead with eight rebounds.

Case Western opened the second half on an 11-2 burst that sliced an 11-point Emory halftime lead to two points with just over 15 minutes left in the contest. The Eagles were nursing a 35-32 edge before going on a timely 11-6 run, with Sayyid scoring five points and Tsao capping it with a layup after coming up with a steal, to claim a 46-38 lead with 10:31 on the clock. The Spartans then responded with a 12-2 surge, highlighted by Laura Mummey's nine straight points, to claim their first lead of the night at 50-48. A pair of buckets by freshman Laura Weems, sandwiched by a jumper by Sayyid, accounted for six unanswered points by the Eagles which put them up by four points. The Spartans battled back with a pair of free throws by Brooke Orcutt, followed by a Mummey layup to tie the game at 54-54 with 3:34 remaining.  Mummey topped all players with 21 points.

CWRU enjoyed an edge in field goal shooting, 35.5 percent (22-of-62) to Emory's 32.9 percent (25-of-76), but was hampered by 19 turnovers that Emory generated into 19 points. The Eagles came up with 13 steals on the night, their 14th performance of double figures in that category this season.

Tsao led the Emory scoring attack with eight points, while Sayyid and Egbuna each chipped in seven points, in spearheading the Eagles to a 31-20 lead at halftime. CWRU's point total at the break was an Emory-opponent low for a half in UAA play this season. Emory connected on 34.2 percent (13-of-38) of its field goal attempts compared to the Spartans' effort of 27.6 percent (8-of-29).  Emory forced Case into 13 turnovers during the opening 20 minutes of action with the Eagles recording 10 steals. A jumper by Tsao gave Emory a 19-8 edge with 9:07 left in the stanza. The Spartans drew to within six points with 4:55 remaining, but Emory accounted for seven of nine points over the final 3:30, with Sayyid scoring five points, to claim the 11-point cushion at the break.
