From NYU Athletics
The New York University women's basketball team opened up
University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 68-49 victory
over Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon, January 10, at Red
Auerbach Arena in Waltham, MA.
NYU (11-0, 1-0 UAA) entered the contest ranked #8 in the nation
by D3hoops.com and #9 in the USA
TodaySports Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, and played like
it throughout. The Violets took a 3-2 lead over Brandeis (8-4, 0-1
UAA) with 17:41 left in the first on a three-point basket
from Amy Harioka and never relinquished the
advantage for the remainder of the contest.
That basket from Harioka kicked off a 10-0 NYU run and put the
momentum firmly with the visiting Violets.
"As a team we talk a lot about momentum shifts -- that's the game
of basketball --- and when you're playing against good teams like
Brandeis or any other UAA team, it really is about the team that
can go on runs and weather the other team's runs," said NYU Head
Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory.
NYU was led by the trio of Kaitlyn
Read, Megan Dawe and Emily
Rowe. Read was the leading scorer in the contest, pouring in
a season-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds, five assists
and five steals. Dawe was 7-of-10 from the floor to finish with 16
points and a pair of rebounds. Rowe led all players with a
career-best 15 rebounds and chipped in 12 points for her
fourth-career double-double. The sophomore center had a
game-high-tying two blocks, as well.
"Offensively, those three obviously gave us a lot of production and
put the ball in the basket," said Hall-Gregory. "But what I was
more pleased about was the overall team defensive effort. We did a
great job not just controlling the defensive boards, but really
giving ourselves extra possessions on the offensive boards. I think
going forward in the UAA, that's key."
Overall, the Violets outrebounded the Judges 47-36 and dominated
the area under the basket, outscoring Brandeis 30-16 in points in
the paint.
