The #8/#9 (D3hoops.com/USA Today
Sports) New York University women's basketball team
remained undefeated with an 83-72 victory against host Carnegie
Mellon University in a University Athletic Association (UAA)
contest on Sunday, January 18, at the Skibo Gymnasium in
Pittsburgh, PA.
Kaitlyn Read's 17 points led a balanced Violet attack as NYU
improved to a perfect 14-0 record this season and a 3-0 mark in UAA
play. NYU's start to the season is its best since it started the
2001-02 season of with 14 straight victories, as well.
Riley Wurtz came off the bench to score a season-high 15
points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, while Megan Dawe
went 7-of-10 and also scored 15. Wurtz added three assists
and a steal.
"Riley really attacked hard. She played smart, brought lots
of energy and made good decisions offensively," said NYU Assistant
Coach Lizzie Boeck.
The Violets trailed by four early in the game, but went on
to take a 46-36 halftime lead over the Tartans (9-4, 1-2
UAA).
NYU extended its lead to a game-high 18 points, 73-55, on
Read's two free throws with 6:22 remaining.
"We got great contributions from everyone," Boeck added. "The
bench gave us good minutes. It was a solid all-around
performance."
HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Violets shot 58.1 percent (18-of-31) in the first half,
including 6-of-7 from three-point range.
- Melissa Peng totaled a game-high five
assists to go with her eight points.
- Emily Rowe also scored eight
points.
- Dawe finished with a team-high six rebounds, as
well.
