The New York University women's basketball team, which ended the
regular season with a 21-4 overall record and a third-place (10-4)
mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA), has been chosen
as one of eight schools to host the first and second rounds of the
2015 NCAA Division III Championship.
The announcement was made on Monday afternoon, March 2.
The Violets have now earned a bid to the NCAA Championship in two
consecutive seasons and will face Virginia Wesleyan
College (19-9, 10-6 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) on
Friday night, March 6, at 7:00 pm. Prior to NYU's contest against
the Marlins, Amherst College (23-3, 8-2 New England Small
College Athletic Conference) will face Eastern
University (22-5, 13-1 Freedom Conference) at 5:00 pm.
Both matchups will take place at NYU's Jerome S. Coles Sports
Center in Manhattan.
This is the first-ever meeting between NYU and Virginia Wesleyan.
The winner of that contest will face the winner of the game between
the Jeffs and Eagles on Saturday, March 7, at 5:00 pm.
"I'm so excited for the opportunity and I know NYU will do a
fabulous job hosting this tournament," said NYU Head
Coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. "The people that that
work here are incredible. I know our kids are really excited about
this opportunity and they deserve it. Our players have put in a lot
of hard work, and to go from 10-15 three seasons ago to sitting at
21-4 and hosting an NCAA Tournament is a great feeling. So much
credit goes to those players and assistant coaches who have put in
so much effort."
The last time NYU hosted the NCAA Championships was back on March
6-7, 2009. The Violets defeated Salve Regina University 80-55 on
March 6 and Stevens Institute of Technology 71-57 on March 7 at
Coles before falling to Amherst on the road on March 13, 2009, in
the Sweet 16.
