Chicago Runs Past Brandeis, 67-50

From University of Chicago Athletics

For the second-straight game, the University of Chicago women's basketball team never trailed while earning a 67-50 victory against Brandeis University on Friday.

The Maroons improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Judges dropped to 9-6, including 1-3 in the UAA.

UChicago scored the opening seven points of the game, with sophomore forward Britta Nordstrom contributing a pair of layups. The Judges started cold and missed their first nine shots. Senior forward Hannah Ballard scored in close at 17-5 midway through the half and then stepped outside the arc to drill a three-pointer at 22-7.

Senior guard Morgan Donovan got in on the scoring with a three-pointer and a layup of her own at 30-12. UChicago was held to only two points in the last six minutes of the half, but still held a double-digit lead of 32-22 at the intermission. Donovan provided seven points in the half.

The second half was all UChicago. The defense remained stout and the visitors built their advantage all the way up to 28 points at 63-35. The Maroons got all 14 of their active players into the game. A democratic scoring effort allowed six different players to score at least seven points each. Ballard and junior guard Caitlin Moore paced the team with 10 points each off the bench.

In the final statistics, the Maroons led in rebounds (49-44) and committed fewer turnovers (18-20). Second-chance points were firmly in their favor at 22-4, as were points in the paint at 34-14. It was the second time this season that UChicago has held a team to less than 30 percent shooting from the field.
