Maroons Pick Up First Win over Capital, 74-71

The University of Chicago women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season, 74-71 over Capital University at the 2014 Main View Tipoff Tournament on Friday.

The Maroons evened their record at 1-1. The Crusaders fell to 0-2.

With Manchester University serving as the tournament host, UChicago and Capital started the game out tied at 13-13. The Maroons then jumped ahead at 21-14, but the Crusaders answered right back and led 28-27. Two free throws by sophomore forward Britta Nordstrom put UChicago back on top 34-32 headed into halftime. Senior guard Morgan Donovan tallied eight points in the half to lead the team.

A three-pointer by senior forward Ellie Greiner made the score 41-34, and a trey by freshman guard Elizabeth Nye increased the advantage to 48-38. Once again, Capital hung around and slowly trimmed the deficit to 60-59 with six minutes left in the half. The Maroons went on a 9-0 run from there as senior forward Claire Devaney contributed five of the points.

The game's result was still in doubt in the final minute. Nye sank two clutch free throws with 25 seconds remaining, giving UChicago a 74-71 lead. The Crusaders had a chance to tie in the final 10 seconds, but junior guard Caitlin Moore stole the ball and clinched the victory.

Moore and Devaney each ended up with 13 points while Capital's Simonne Gage racked up 23 points. The Maroons held sway on the boards, 44-38 in total rebounds. Turnovers were close to even, with 23 by UChicago and 20 by Capital.
