Chicago Defeats CWRU, 63-44

The University of Chicago women's basketball team extended its win streak to seven games after defeating Case Western Reserve University 63-44 on Friday.

During their streak, the Maroons (13-6 overall, 7-1 UAA) have won by an average of 16.0 points per game. The Spartans fell to 7-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

After an early tie at 5-5, UChicago went on an 11-2 run. Senior forward Claire Devaney made a layup and then a three-pointer on consecutive possessions during that time and the visitors took a 16-7 lead. Turnovers were prevalent as the two teams combined for 18 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.

UChicago kept extending its lead, scoring four-straight layups with two by senior forward Hannah Ballard to charge ahead 24-9. Freshman guard Elizabeth Nye sank a three-pointer after rebounding her own missed shot, and the Maroons took a 29-18 advantage into halftime. The visitors shot 40 percent on its field goals while the home side shot only 26.1 percent.

Case made an attempt to cut the lead down to size at 39-32. However, UChicago kept scoring in the paint and led by at least 10 points for the final 10 minutes of the game. The Maroons outscored the Spartans 38-16 in the paint overall.

A 12-2 run by UChicago featured points scored by five different players. The team went up 54-36 at that point and cruised from there for its ninth double-digit victory of the season.

The rebounding category was squarely in favor of the Maroons, 44-33. Both teams piled up turnovers, with 22 by UChicago and 24 by Case. The visitors yanked 14 steals and blocked seven shots, with Ballard contributing a season-high three rejections. This is also the third opponent that UChicago has held to under 30 percent shooting from the field.
