Rochester Dominates Boards to Hand Clarkson First Loss

Rochester built a commanding 59-31 rebounding advantage and rolled past previously –unbeaten Clarkson University in the opening round of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Friday night.
 
Fueled by the dominance on the glass, the Yellowjackets posted a 74-57 victory. Rochester will play Ferrum College of Virginia in Saturday's 8 p.m. championship game. Clarkson will play King's (PA) College at 3 p.m. for third place. Ferrum defeated King's, 69-59, on Friday.
 
Freshman Al Leslie registered her first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Tylar Guerrieri scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds for UR (3-0).
 
Mary Kronenwetter scored nine points and had eight rebounds. Blair Landolfi scored seven points with 11 rebounds. Ally Zywicki scored six points and registered five assists.
 
Ashley Loggins scored 19 points with eight rebounds and three steals for Clarkson (2-1). Stephanie Grobe scored 14 points with four assists.
 
The Golden Knights led by four points twice and were up by three, 22-19, with eight minutes left in the first half. Landolfi's layup started an 11-0 run over three minutes. Kelsey Hurley made a layup, then sank a trey from right wing. Kronenwetter made two free throws, and Emily Lewis scored in the lane. Rochester led, 30-22, with 4:32 left before halftime. With the score at 32-26 Rochester, the Yellowjackets ran off eight more: a followup by Leslie, a fast break layup by Leslie, two free throws from Breanna Madrazo, and a followup from Guerrieri. Clarkson's Devin Sorell scored just before the halftime buzzer to keep the Golden Knights within 40-28 at halftime.
 
Two free throws from Guerrieri, a short jumper off the right baseline by Leslie, and a driving layup by Zywicki stretched the Rochester lead to 48-30 at 17:25. Clarkson staged a flurry and pulled within eight, 52-44, on a four-footer off the baseline by Colleen Daley with 13:53 remaining.
 
Kronenwetter's followup ignited a 12-3 run over the next seven minutes. Leslie scored in the lane, then put in a layup. Guerrieri sank a trey from the top of the key. Kayla Kibling made one of two from the line, and Kronenwetter finished the sprint with a layup. Rochester's lead stood at 64-47 with less than seven minutes left.
